When should I pray?

In Islam, Muslims are required to perform five daily prayers, known as Salah. The names & times for these prayers are as follows:

  1. Fajr: Fajr is prayed before sunrise. It includes two Rak’ahs (units of prayer).
  2. Dhuhr: Dhuhr is prayed when the sun begins to decline from its zenith until it is halfway towards setting. It consists of four Rak’ahs.
  3. Asr: Asr is prayed in the late afternoon, typically in the later part of the day before sunset. It includes four Rak’ahs.
  4. Maghrib: Maghrib is prayed just after sunset and consists of three Rak’ahs.
  5. Isha: Isha is prayed after twilight has disappeared. It includes four Rak’ahs.

It’s important to note that the timing of prayers is based on the position of the sun, and that changes daily.
The specific times can be determined using various methods, such as prayer timetables provided by the Masjid and apps.

Many Muslims use smartphone apps, like The Masjid App, that provide Masjid prayer times.

Pray ASAP

It’s recommended to perform each prayer within its designated time, but there is some flexibility in certain circumstances. However, Muslims are encouraged to observe the prayers as close to the start times as possible. The daily prayers help Muslims maintain a strong connection with Allah and serve as a reminder of their faith throughout the day.

Pray with the Jummat at the Masjid

If you are near the Masjid, make an effort to pray there! Each Masjid should have a designated time that they are praying each prayer. This is called an Iqama Time. Iqama times can be found on most Masjid websites or on The Masjid App.

Praying While Traveling

Praying while traveling is allowed in Islam, with some modifications:

  1. Shortened Prayers (Qasr): When traveling, Muslims can shorten the Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha prayers from four Rak’ahs to two Rak’ahs. The Fajr and Maghrib prayers remain unchanged.
  2. Combining Prayers (Jam’ Taqdim): Muslims may combine Dhuhr and Asr prayers during their travel time or Maghrib and Isha prayers during the same journey, reducing the number of prayer times while ensuring they are prayed within the allowed time frame.
