Zakat (Obligatory Charity)

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is an obligatory form of almsgiving or charity for eligible Muslims. It is a fundamental concept in Islamic finance and social welfare, emphasizing the principle of wealth distribution and assistance to those in need.

1. Obligation: Zakat is mandatory for all eligible Muslims who meet specific criteria related to their wealth and financial standing. It is considered a form of worship and a means of purifying one’s wealth.
2. Wealth Subject to Zakat: Zakat is typically calculated based on a person’s accumulated wealth, including savings, investments, gold, silver, and other assets, after deducting certain expenses and debts.
3. Nisab (Minimum Threshold): For Zakat to be obligatory, a person’s wealth must meet or exceed a minimum threshold known as Nisab. This threshold is determined based on the value of gold or silver and is subject to change based on economic conditions.
4. Rate of Zakat: The standard rate for Zakat is 2.5% of the eligible wealth. This means that individuals who meet the criteria must give away 2.5% of their wealth annually to those in need.
5. Recipients of Zakat: Zakat is specifically designated for certain categories of recipients, as mentioned in the Quran (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60). These categories include the poor, the needy, those employed to collect Zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled (new Muslims or those interested in Islam), captives and slaves seeking freedom, debtors, and in the cause of Allah (for various charitable purposes).
6. Distribution: Zakat is typically distributed locally, ensuring that it directly benefits the community and those in need. Islamic communities may establish Zakat committees or organizations to collect and distribute Zakat funds.
7. Timing: Zakat is an annual obligation, and it is incumbent upon eligible Muslims to calculate and pay their Zakat during the Islamic lunar calendar year.
